The Coach is a mentor that teaches the scientific thinking. The coach guides the team through the Kata process, but not provide the solution. The solution is not known yet until after the experiment.

During the coaching cycle, the Coach will ask the questions on the card in order. The Coach can ask some clarifying questions, but should keep the session on track.

Coaching Cycle

The coaching cycle should lead to an experiment (PDCA). The Coach needs to allow the teams to fail during their experiment. The failure is how the team learn to come up with the solution. The idea is to fail early and often so that it is not catastrophic.

Failing is okay

The Coach needs to allow the teams to fail during their experiment. Failing is the first attempt in learning. The idea is to fail early and often so that it is not catastrophic.

What to Do Next

Try to do a coaching cycle every day with the team. This practice will help establish the routine. Coaching for 2 hours in one week is not as effective as 15 minutes everyday. Download the Coaching Card to continue practicing.
